Zephy was a large-scale, site specific solo exhibition at Althorp Gallery in ArtsDepot, London in May 2016. The interactive installation was inspired by the traditional Japanese festival of Hamani, where people gather to enjoy the bloom of the cherry blossoms.
The focal point was a custom designed windmill, made in collaboration with the master carpenter Dan Birch. Visitors were invited to turn the windmill to generate a light breeze which would billow the iridescent foil draped across the gallery’s ceiling.
A wicker basket held large fabric sheets printed with the same spot patterns as the windmill. Visitors playfully used these to also generate a breeze to move the foil.
A workshop station to the side of the gallery allowed visitors to make their own fans and learn about Hanko stamps.
